Adventure Writer For Windows - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How much Disk Space does Adventure Writer use and how do I start the application?
Adventure Writer requires 2.5mb of disk space and is started by selecting Programs\Digital Alchemy\Adventure Writer from the Windows Start Menu.
How do I create a New Map?
To create a new map select New... From the file menu, or press the New button on the toolbar.
How do I Add / Remove Text Captions?
Click the right mouse button, on the map location where you desire to add the caption, and Select Caption... from the popup menu. A caption dialog will appear for you to specify the details of your text caption. Pressing the Clear button of the caption dialog removes an existing text caption.

How do I add symbols to a map?
Drawing maps in Adventure Writer is quick and simple, with a minimal amount of artistic skill required, simply locate the desired terrain symbol in the scrolling terrain symbol selector, click on it making it the current symbol, then click on a map location to place the symbol onto your map. Clicking again will remove the symbol, or click and drag to fill an area with the symbol.

How do I create Hyperlinks in Adventure Writer Maps?
Click the right mouse button, on the map location where you desire to add a Hyperlink, then select Link... | Properties from the Popup Menu. The Link properties dialog which is displayed allows you to create a link to any other file on your system.

How do I navigate an adventure using Hyperlinks?
To follow a link, click the right mouse button, on the map location where the link you wish to follow is located and select Links... | View and the link will be processed. Additionally if you are in navigation mode, simply clicking on the map location will process the link.

What Types of files are handled internally by Adventure Writer?
Currently CAR (Map Files), BMP, GIF (Normal & Animated), and TBL (Tablemaster scripts) are processed internally by Adventure Writer.

Can Adventure Writer be Extended to support new types of files?
Absolutely! You may configure any Windows application as a Tool using the Tools | Configure Tools... option from the terrain selector, and any tool may be configured as a viewer for a specific type of file. An example of this is the Gurps Character Assistant GCAVIEW.EXE application which is configured as a viewer for *.GCA files.

What External Viewers come Pre-Configured with Adventure Writer?
Currently, the GCAVIEW.EXE gurps character assistant file viewer, WORDPAD.EXE document editor, and SNDREC32.EXE sound recorder are preconfigured on the installation diskettes. Additional viewers may be added and/or configured in later releases.

What does Adventure Writer do with Hyperlinks to files which are not supported or Configured?
If adventure writer has no information on how to handle the file, it will tell Windows to execute the file using windows file associations. If this fails the link will not be processed.

Adding Existing Symbols to the Symbol Palette?
To add a terrain symbol to a maps terrain palette, first select the select the position of the symbol in the symbol palette, then right click on the symbol palette selector, and select Properties... from the Popup Menu. The Symbol Properties dialog will allow you to select a new symbol from the existing terrain symbol BMP files.

How Do I make BMP files available for use as Symbols by Adventure Writer?
Any BMP file may be used as a terrain symbol bo Adventure Writer. To make a BMP file available for use in Adventure Writer simply copy the BMP file to the SYMBOL directory located directly under wherever Adventure Writer has been installed on your system.
